My name is Macky Ruiz. I have been working on lab and IT infrastructure for roughly 9 years. Currently I work for a great startup company, which I joined early in 2013. Under my watch i’ve seen the infrastructure and lab grow from 1 rack to 39 racks which spread out in two data centers and supported the company from originally 20 to 160 employees.
Prior to my current role, I was a Lab Systems Administrator at large networking company, supporting a routing and switching business unit. Before that I worked for a startup (then acquired in 2010) that developed and produced specialized broadcast equipment such as video routing, server and storage products for companies that produce, process and distribute video content for the television and internet. I worked as a Lab administrator supporting 100+ racks, US and India based Engineers.
I originally graduated with a degree in Graphics Design, but made a career change into the technology world. My career turn a early 180 degree turn after college once I had gotten an internship for a gigapixel project through CMU and worked on-site at NASA AMES Research Center. Surrounded by great people, I was simply at awe. I knew absolutely nothing about Linux and thought computer networking was black magic wizardry. I’ve pushed myself to learn as much as possible and a lot of my learning came from reading forums and stumbling on tech blogs like this.
Now after almost 10 years in the industry, I feel I can finally give back to the world wide web and help somehow with the content I provide.
Fun fact: People ask me whats with the name, “SuperMaru”? Funny thing is, I could not think of a name for the website and pushed a bunch of information over to a name generator. I thought that “SuperMaru”sounds like the video game “Super Mario” and figured it would be memorable. Maru, is also the name of a cat in Japan who has been popular on YouTube. I thought it would be fitting as when a non-tech person asks what I do, I simply reply with: “I fix the internet at work so everyone can watch cat videos on YouTube”. And to truly make it personal, Maru contains the first two letters of my first and last name. And the Super part? Aren’t your IT guys superman by magically fixing your issues by pressing keys into a magical black terminal window?
On my spare time I enjoy wandering the great outdoors and taking photographs (Shameless promotion: www.mackyruiz.com).
